MULTI-FAMILY
Meridian Grosvenor Station
Rockville, MD
SITUATION:
In 2005, Paradigm Development initiated plans for a new 15 story, 301 apartment unit project in Rockville, Maryland, and hired the architectural firm, Lessard Urban, Inc., to design the building. Meridian at Grosvenor Station consists of 301 apartment units, 8,600 square feet of retail, and amenities including; full- service concierge, 24-hour front desk attendant, a resident library, a business center, and a state-of-the-art fitness center. In 2006, Heartline was retained to design a fitness center consistent with the building’s theme and demographic. Lessard Urban allocated a h igh-profile, 1,400 square foot space adjacent to the lobby for the n ew fitness center. A terrific space, with a number of unique desig n features including: structural pillars, wall cut-ins, and windows running the length of the room’s far wall—resulting in an exciting workout environment, but at the same time posed equipment l ayout challenges for Heartline.
SOLUTION:
The main issues involved allocating enough equipment to service a 301 unit apartment complex, and organizing these machines in such a manner to provide a consistent workout flow for the tenants. Fortunately, we were able to achieve the established mix and the flow goals. The Matrix brand of strength and cardio products was chosen to complement the space. The new Matrix 7 Series cardiovascular systems with “embedded” 15” screens with FitTouch ™ capability were centrally located in the room facing the club’s entrance, tapping into floor mounted electrical and CATV circ uits. By showcasing the cardio equipment in the center of the room , we were able to strategically locate a free weight area in the bac k end of the facility, while positioning single station Matrix machi nes along the room’s perimeter forming a strength training circuit. Finally, a variety of gym balls, medi-balls, and adjustable benches and abdominal crunches were provided to round out the facility.
