GOVERNMENT
South Bowie Recreation Center
Bowie, MD
SITUATION:
The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (MNCPPC) is a bi-county agency that was empowered by the State of Maryland in 1927 to acquire, develop, maintain and administer the regional park and recreational system in Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties. The Commission coordinates and acts on matters of interest to both counties, including the development and renovation of each county’s new and existing recreation centers. Since Heartline has installed all 22 fitness centers for Montgomery County’s community centers and has the annual product and service contract for these facilities, MNCPPC was able to ride this contract to build-out their new South Bowie fitness center.
SOLUTION:
Unlike Fairfax County, Virginia Parks and Recreational Department strategy of focusing on fewer, but much larger recreation centers, Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties have chosen to develop a more “neighborhood” oriented community center approach. This strategy concentrates on a substantially larger number of smaller facilities. Whereas, a Fairfax County fitness center might be 4,000 square feet, the new South Bowie fitness center totals approximately 2,000 square feet. Keeping with Heartline’s Montgomery County template, we installed ten (10) Star Trac treadmills, ellipticals, bikes and steppers, and fourteen (14) Paramount selectorized strength units, including a Paramount Functional Trainer. Complementing the cardio and strength areas, is a comprehensive free weight and dumbbell training space, including Heartline’s CoreRack ™ and Angle Leg Press, and a Paramount Smith machine and a variety of free weight benches, dumbbells, and Olympic plates round out the facility.
