Granby High School
Norfolk, VA
SITUATION:
Heartline began working with Norfolk County Public Schools (NCPS) in 2003, and together with the director of physical education's athletics specialist, began evaluating NCPS’s high school and middle school fitness and weight room facilities. Unfortunately, many of these schools were either conceived without fitness centers, or were only allocated a minimum amount of space. Built in 1939, Granby High School certainly fit into this category. Despite a relatively small training area, Granby has always excelled in athletics, particularly the school’s wrestling program. Granby has won 21 Virginia State wrestling titles, and its coach, Billy Martin, was inducted into the Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1980. Martin's "Granby Roll" wrestling move is internationally known and utilized today. However, given Granby’s increasing student body, it was time to elevate the school’s training facilities. Heartline’s challenge involved creating a layout and equipment package that could effectively double Granby’s weight room.
SOLUTION:
Actually, Granby’s 2,300 student population, 1,000 square foot training room, and a room full of single station machines, worked to Heartline’s advantage. Given the facility’s 35’ x 30’ space, we were able to fit three of Heartline’s Dual CoreRack ™ training systems with Olympic platforms along the 35’ wall, leaving amble space for three existing plate loaded leg extension and curl units. On the adjacent wall, Heartline situated three Paramount dual station selectorized units (lat/rows and multi-presses), and a Paramount PFT-200 functional trainer. In front of the Dual CoreRack ™ training systems we allocated a 5’x 30’ multi-purpose training space for auxiliary dumbbell lifts and plyometrics. Finally, to round out the facility, Heartline installed a dumbbell area complete with adjustable benches and a 2.5#-75# set of York rubber hex dumbbells. A facility that historically operated with 18 student/athletes, is now able to accommodate some 40 student/athletes. A win-win for everyone!

“Jason, thanks again for all your help and support on the Granby project. Despite the small space, you really have optimized the training experience for Granby. The room and equipment look fantastic!” Steve Suttmiller, Athletics Specialist, Norfolk County Public Schools
