Handley High School
Winchester VA
SITUATION:
In 2007, John Handley High School began a major renovation that involved increasing the size of the school’s weight room. However, the idea was to not only renovate the facility, but to change the complexion of the room itself--from a free weight-oriented weight room to a full scale, athletic training and student wellness center. After working with Handley’s new athletic director, Bill Stewart, on both the Millbrook and Sherando High School projects, our respective visions for the new Handley facility were in sync. Although, construction delays and ultimately the way the room addition was constructed, certainly created layout issues.
SOLUTION:
After a number of trial designs, it was determined that the new bump-out space would work perfectly as a cardiovascular and light conditioning area—a space that would be stocked with Star Trac treadmills, ellipticals, bikes, stability balls and bosu trainers. By compartmentalizing the cardiovascular area in this way, we were able to free up additional space for Heartline’s Dual CoreRack™ training systems with Olympic platforms and circuit and auxiliary training systems. Additional strength machines included PowerRushers, Lat/Rows, Leg Extension/Curl Combos, Functional Trainers, and a number of Paramount Dual Station selectorized units. A facility that once was able to train 32 student/athletes at one time, is now able to work-out 75 student/athletes. Certainly, enlarging the space helps, but nothing frees up space like Heartline’s multi-functional training systems. Handley’s five Dual CoreRacks ™ can handle up to 40 student/athletes training in all core lifting disciplines at one time. By optimizing the space in this manner, Handley is now able to introduce more students into the fitness and wellness environment.
Testimonial:
“The Handley renovation has been a four-year project with a total price tag of approximately $70 million. There have been many challenges including operating without a gym for the fall season and for half of the winter season. We are currently renovating the outdoor facilities including the installation of a new press box/concession area, turf field and eight lane running track. The design of the fitness room was particularly challenging given the vision we had for the future space. A facility that could be used for physical education classes, after-school conditioning programs, individual team conditioning programs, injury rehabilitation and therapy sessions, and for a staff fitness program. The new fitness room was a $100,000 collaboration with Heartline Fitness, and we couldn’t be happier with the results. The Handley coaching staff is excited about the potential benefits of our new training center, as we continue to build a championship athletic program.” Bill Stewart, Athletic Director
